A Roadmap for the Hero, Part 9: Reward

A Roadmap for the Hero, Part 9: Reward

9. Seizing the Sword

After defeating the enemy, surviving death and overcoming every doubt, fear and personal challenge, the hero transforms into a new realm, emerging with a reward or prize, stronger from the battles she has faced. This comes in many guises and can look like reconciliation with an ally or loved one, treasure, knowledge or insight, or even a secret. Whatever the hero emerges with, it can help her return to her Ordinary World, and she must put the celebration of her triumph aside so she can prepare for the end of her journey.

What did this look like for Doris?

“And the fairies never laughed so hard in all their lives because it was their custom to dream of jokes, play them, and then fly away. This was the first joke they had witnessed. So they had the impact of not just laughing and the thought of the joke, but could see it happen in front of them. Maybe they wouldn’t fly away again? Maybe they wouldn’t be so afraid.”

Doris receives adulation from fairies and bats through their laughter. This is her reward. Her honey cakes worked to bring joy and peace. Doris’s reward lies in helping the fairies see the fruits of their folly-filled labor––the witness of their first joke. This gives the fairies wisdom, and they can use it to give them courage to not fly away and be brave.

Have you ever reconciled with a loved one or discovered physical or intellectual treasure on your quest? Have you ever received insight or discovered a secret that changed your life? Write about how you have transformed after your battle/personal challenge and what reward you received.

This is Part 9 of a 12 part series. Be sure to read Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5, Part 6, Part 7, and Part 8 if you missed it!
